Keep Your Cool in Daytona Beach

Daytona Beach drivers rely on their vehicle's coolant system to keep their engine cool. Coolant (also called antifreeze) mixed with water flows through your vehicle engine and absorbs heat. The mixture then flows out to the radiator where it's cooled by air flowing over the radiator. From there the coolant/water mix circulates back through the engine to absorb more heat. There's a reason we mix coolant and water. Water alone actually does a good job transferring heat from the engine. The problem is that water boils at a temperature that's easily reached inside your vehicle's engine, so it can turn to steam which does not conduct heat as well and is harder to contain. Also, if it's freezing outside in Daytona Beach, the water in your engine could freeze while your vehicle is sitting out in the FL cold. So, if you remember your high school chemistry, you'll know that a mixture has both a higher boiling point and a lower freezing point ... read more

Nighttime Visibility in Daytona Beach

There are a number of factors that contribute to the high nighttime accident rate in the Daytona Beach area, things like drowsy driving and a higher rate of impaired driving. Without a doubt, visibility is a major contributor. Let's focus on visibility…It's said that 90 percent of our driving decisions are based on what we see. Nighttime driving has the effect of reducing 20/20 vision to the equivalent of 20/50 vision. What you could clearly see at 50 feet in daylight can't be seen until you are just 20 feet away at night.Too make sure your headlights are giving you the greatest visibility, visit us at Honest-1 Auto Care, located at 2325 S Ridgewood Ave, Daytona Beach, FL 32119. Please give us a call to make an appointment: 386.898.0774.Accident avoidance is dependent on reaction time. Reaction time deteriorates measurably in low light conditions. Honest-1 Auto Care Tire Safety: Washington vs. Lincoln

Welcome to the Honest-1 Auto Care automotive blog. Today, let's talk about the effect of tire wear. Let's focus on stopping in wet Daytona Beach conditions. In order for a tire to have good contact with the road, it has to move the water out of the way. If it can't move the water, the tire will actually ride on top of a thin film of water. That's called hydroplaning. If it's really bad, Daytona Beach drivers can actually spin out of control - endangering themselves and the other drivers around them. At best, you won't stop as fast. So how does a tire move water? It has channels for water to flow through. Look at your vehicle tire and you'll see channels: channels that run around the tire and channels that flow across the tire. They're designed to direct water away from the tire so it can contact the road better. And the deeper the channel, the more water it can move. A brand new Honest-1 Auto Care tire has very deep channels and can easily move a lo ... read more

PCV Valve Service at Honest-1 Auto Care in Daytona Beach

Today, we are talking about your PCV valve. Unburnt fuel is forced into the crankcase as your engine runs.  The PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve vents this unburnt fuel and oil vapors from the crankcase and sends it back into the air intake system to be burned in the engine.  A clogged PCV will not allow these vapors to escape. This can dilute and contaminate the oil, leading to damaging engine oil sludge. It can also cause vehicle engine corrosion, something we see occasionally at Honest-1 Auto Care. At high speeds on FL freeways, the pressure can build up to the point that gaskets and seals start to leak. Back in the old days, vehicles were simply installed with a hose that vented these gases out into the atmosphere. But starting in the 1964 model year, environmental protection laws required that these gases be recycled back into the air intake system to be mixed with fuel and burned in the vehicle's engine. This is much better for air qualit ... read more

Upsizing Wheels and Tires With Honest-1 Auto Care

Many Daytona Beach drivers want to accessorize their vehicle - you know, make it theirs. One of the easiest ways to get a custom look is to get some new wheels. There are thousands of wheel designs at Daytona Beach area tire shops to get you the look you want. And for many Daytona Beach drivers, that look includes bigger wheels. It used to be that cars came from the factory with 15 or 16 inch wheels. Now 16, 17 and even 18 inchers are standard. And the factories are offering optional wheel packages up to 20 inches or more. So let's talk about what to consider when you want to upsize your wheels. It's not exactly a DIY project, so you need to know a thing or two before you get started. The most important term to know is rolling diameter. The rolling diameter is simply the overall height of your tire. Unless you want to modify your vehicle suspension, you'll want to keep your rolling diameter the same when you upsize your wheels.Let's think about those three golden doughnuts in fro ... read more

Differential Service in Daytona Beach, FL - What You Need to Know

Scratching your head? Don't worry, if you don't know what a differential is – you will in a moment. That fact is that if you drive a car anywhere in Daytona Beach, FL, you have a differential. Whether your vehicle is front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, you have a differential. Some Daytona Beach vehicles might even have two or three. Not surprisingly, a differential's job is to compensate for differences; specifically, they're the differences in wheel speed when turning. For instance, imagine taking a corner near your Daytona Beach, FL, home. Your inside wheel has a shorter distance to travel than the outside wheel as you turn the corner. That means that your outside wheel has to turn faster to keep pace with the inside wheel. The differential allows the wheels to turn at different speeds while still providing power to your vehicle. Without a differential, Daytona Beach residents' tires would scrub and hop along the pavement during turns like the early ca ... read more

Get Where You're Going with Power Steering Service in Daytona Beach

Today we're going to talk about power steering service in Daytona Beach. If you took an informal poll around Daytona Beach you'd probably find that most vehicle owners have never heard of power steering service. That's not surprising. Even though power steering is standard on every vehicle, most people in Daytona Beach aren't aware that it needs periodic service. If you're younger than a certain age, you've probably never driven a vehicle without power steering. To get an idea of the difference; if you've ever cut a board with a hand saw, you know it's a lot of work. Using a power saw is easy-peasy by comparison.Without power steering, your arms have to do all the work to steer the wheels, and that's hard, especially around downtown Daytona Beach. That's why old cars had such big steering wheels: to get enough leverage to steer. Most vehicles in Daytona Beach have a hydraulic power steering system. The serpentine belt from the engine powers a pump. The pump pressurizes the power ste ... read more
